Every June 8th, we celebrate World Oceans Day—a time to reflect on the vast, beautiful blue that covers more than 70% of our planet. For me, as a photographer, the ocean has always been more than a subject. It’s a source of inspiration, serenity, and a reminder of how interconnected we all are with nature.
Whether it’s the soft light reflecting off a tide pool at sunset, the raw power of crashing waves, or the delicate textures of seashells and marine life, the ocean offers endless visual poetry. But beyond its beauty, the ocean plays a crucial role in our survival—producing over half of the world’s oxygen, regulating climate, and sustaining millions of species (including us!).
This year’s World Oceans Day theme is "Catalysing Action for Our Ocean & Climate"—a call to not just admire the sea, but to protect it. And that’s where photography becomes more than art. It becomes a form of activism.
As someone who captures the magic of coastal landscapes and marine moments, I believe in the power of imagery to educate, evoke emotion, and inspire change. A single photo can spark curiosity, shift perspectives, or open a conversation. When we show the vibrancy of marine life or the heartbreaking reality of plastic pollution, we remind people that what’s beneath the surface matters—and that it needs us.
Photography allows us to document what’s at risk of being lost. It creates a visual archive of the beauty we hope to preserve. It connects people—especially those who may never get to see the ocean firsthand—to its wonder and its fragility.
Here are a few ways we can all help protect our oceans:
-
Reduce single-use plastics: Bring your own bags, bottles, and straws. Every small change matters.
-
Do not eat seafood: Choosing to abstain from seafood helps reduce pressure on overfished populations and destructive fishing practices.
-
Participate in beach cleanups: Whether organised or spontaneous, even picking up a few pieces of trash can help wildlife and prevent microplastics from entering the food chain.
-
Share what you love: If you’re a photographer, artist, or storyteller, use your voice. Post your images. Share ocean facts. Encourage others to care through creativity.
This World Oceans Day, I encourage you to take a moment—go for a walk on the beach, dip your toes in the water, or just pause to listen to the sound of waves. Let it remind you of what’s worth preserving. Then, consider how you might share that feeling with someone else.
I’ll be posting some of my favourite ocean-themed photos on Instagram throughout the week. Follow along at @AHart.Photography and tag me in your own #WorldOceansDay images. Let’s celebrate, share, and protect the sea together—one photo at a time.
